Law firms have received two dramatic wake-up calls about the vital importance of data security in the last two years. First, there was the leak of 11.5 million documents from offshore law firm Mossack Fonseca, known as the Panama Papers, which became public in 2016.1 Then came the massive cyberattack on prominent global law firm DLA Piper in the summer of 2017.2 As we will explore, despite the industry’s aversion to media coverage of such attacks, less-visible breaches involving the legal profession are being reported worldwide in ever-increasing numbers.

The cyberattacks of 2017 proved more numerous, sophisticated, and ruthless than in years past. Threat actors, armed with knowledge stolen from the CIA and tools lifted from the NSA, demonstrated an elevated level of proficiency. WannaCry and NotPetya, two prominent threats from last year, successfully exploited these stolen assets in their assault on systems worldwide. As 2017 progressed, new opportunities developed in ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS), opening the gates of malware-for-profit to everyone. Advancements in fileless attacks provided new ways for threats to hide from once reliable detection methods. Malware features such as polymorphism continued to play a powerful role in evading traditional defenses. The victims of cybercrime ranged from private businesses to the fundamental practices of democracy. France and the United States saw significant data breaches during their recent presidential elections. Several high-profile companies lost their customers’ personally identifiable information to cyberattacks, blemishing their brands and costing them untold millions in recovery operations. This report contains an overview of the threat trends and malware families Cylance's customers faced in 2017. This information is shared with the goal of assisting security practitioners, researchers, and individuals in our collective battle against emerging and evolving cyberthreats.

Forrester Consulting was commissioned to conduct a Total Economic Impact™ (TEI) study to examine the potential return on investment (ROI) enterprises may realize by deploying Cylance's advanced threat protection solution, CylancePROTECT®, and its deployment and configuration services, ThreatZero™. The study aims to provide readers with a framework to evaluate the potential financial impact of CylancePROTECT and ThreatZero on their organizations, which will improve customer success with advanced cybersecurity and antivirus protection solutions. To better understand the benefits, costs, and risks associated with an investment in Cylance, Forrester interviewed the Chief Information Security Officer for a Large State County Government, who has used the solutions for over a year. Cylance provides a new-generation, predictive, cybersecurity, and malware prevention solution that leverages artificial intelligence to prevent malware from executing on endpoints in real time. This is usually implemented with ThreatZero, which is a continuous professional service program rendered by Cylance for users of CylancePROTECT. ThreatZero guides through the planning, implementation, integration, and ongoing optimization of the solution. This often includes end user education, training, and support to totally eliminate endpoint threats and incidents. With CylancePROTECT and ThreatZero, the organization was able to reduce security breaches to almost zero, catching malware before it ever gained access to public records. Relative to their previous endpoint protection, this significantly reduced costs from remediation/reimaging and incidence response. Additionally, IT and security employees’ productivity were boosted. Read more in the full TEI report.

Reports of cyberattacks now dominate the headlines. And while most high-profile attacks—including the major breaches at JP Morgan, Anthem and Slack—originated outside of the victimized organizations, theft and misuse of data by privileged users is on the rise. In fact, 69% of enterprise security professionals said they have experienced the theft or corruption of company information at the hands of trusted insiders.1 There are also cases where a company’s third-party contractors, vendors or partners have been responsible for network breaches, either through malicious or inadvertent behavior.

Companies are facing massive cyber security challenges – many of which are rooted in the endpoint. In fact, according to IDC, 70% of successful breaches begin at the endpoint. If you are a Kaspersky Lab customer, and still have breaches in your endpoint security, then something isn’t working. Perhaps you’re struggling to prevent advanced attacks, or your security team may be burdened by maintaining overly complex policies. You and your end users may even be facing performance issues. If you are experiencing any of these issues, then your endpoint security products may actually be creating more problems than they solve. Ask these questions and find out for yourself.

As business models have become increasingly digital, high-profile, reputation-damaging security breaches are grabbing more news media headlines. Leading companies have ramped up their investments in cybersecurity, yet that spending is often not well aligned with actual threats. Studies have shown that server-focused solutions such as network anti-virus, malware detection and website firewalls attract the biggest investments, ignoring the fact that misuse of privileged credentials is by far the most common cause of breaches. The reasons for this disconnect are not well understood, in part because it sits at the intersection of the people and technology domains. This survey, conducted by WSJ Custom Studios with sponsorship from Centrify, seeks insights into senior-level thinking on this issue, including current cybersecurity priorities and the perceived degree of alignment between threats and solutions.

Criminal groups behind today's cyberattacks have become better organized, introducing reconnaissance activity, custom malware, evasion techniques, and other sophisticated tactics that place a burden on traditional security defenses. The litany of high-profile data breaches is impacting every industry and prompting organizations of all sizes to respond by modernizing their IT security infrastructure. The battlefield continues to be at the endpoint, where attackers typically strike to gain initial access to the corporate network. Most organizations have been waging this battle using traditional antivirus at the endpoint, a solution that has received a lot of improvements over its more than 25 years of existence but clearly isn't keeping up with attacker sophistication. Emerging endpoint specialized threat analysis and protection (STAP) products can either replace or complement antivirus by adding behavioral analysis and continuous system and user activity monitoring to identify new and s

How adopting a framework can optimize cybersecurity Today’s threat landscape has created new challenges for security analysts and incident responders, as the number of alerts and their complexity have increased significantly. Organizations with small IT teams are overwhelmed, often lacking the time or resources to investigate every alert. Failing to do so means a high-risk threat might go unnoticed. This can result in a devastating breach, damaging an organization's finances and reputation. This white paper discusses how CrowdStrike is solving these challenges, by implementing the MITRE ATT&CK™ Framework across multiple CrowdStrike processes and product features to help improve analyst’s productivity and prevent breaches. This provides many benefits, including time savings; adding advanced context to security alerts and information; and enabling a common, shared language. However, it also provides some hidden advantages, especially concerning cybersecurity. Read this whitepaper to lear

Cyber security is today an unavoidable concern for law firms and the legal sector at large, which oversees disproportionately large volumes of sensitive data and which is therefore an attractive target for sophisticated threat actors. From confidential information about mergers and acquisitions to disclosures made under attorney-client privilege, today’s law firms are inundated with data that would be disastrous if leaked, both for the results of individual cases and for these firm’s long-term reputations. Indeed, this reputational damage diminishes the very trust upon which the legal profession is predicated, jeopardizing client relationships and hindering customer acquisition. Legal organizations lose 5% of their clients following a data breach, while significant or high-profile breaches can even prompt a firm’s eventual collapse, as was the case for Mossack Fonseca in the infamous Panama Papers breach. In today’s increasingly digital business world, even the most private legal docum
