Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are emerging technologies that will transform organizations faster than ever before. In the digital transformation era, success will be based on using analytics to discover the insights locked in the massive volume of data being generated today. Historically, these insights were discovered through manually intensive data analytics—but the amount of data continues to grow, as does the complexity of data. AI and ML are the latest tools for data scientists, enabling them to refine the data into value faster.

The Internet of Things (IoT) unleashes valuable business insights through data that’s gathered at every level of a retail organization. With IoT and data analytics, retailers now have the capability to gather insight into customer behavior, offer more personalized experiences, achieve better inventory accuracy, create greater supply chain efficiencies, and so much more. But with data comes great risk. A recent report by security firm Thales and 451 Research found that 43 percent of retailers have experienced a data breach in the past year, with a third reporting more than one breach.1 Intel® technology-based gateways and Asavie, a provider of next-gen enterprise mobility management and IoT connectivity solutions, offer a security connectivity solution that minimizes the effort and cost to businesses to ensure safety from cybersecurity attacks. In addition, the Intel/Asavie IoT solution provides retailers with a solid basis to build their smart, connected projects:

"Things are not as they used to be in the enterprise. Today’s employees are mobile, they’re storing and accessing data in cloud apps, and are in disparate networks. Yet, the threat-centric security approach, with its static policies forces decisions about cyber activity with no insight into the broader context. The result is a disproportionate number of flagged activities, overwhelming security teams who have no way to understand the ones most worthy of investigation. Read Rethinking Data Security with a Risk-Adaptive Approach to learn how a human-centric, risk-adaptive approach can help your organization be more proactive"

There’s strong evidence organizations are challenged by the opportunities presented by external information sources such as social media, government trend data, and sensor data from the Internet of Things (IoT). No longer content to use internal databases alone, they see big data resources augmented with external information resources as what they need in order to bring about meaningful change. According to a September 2015 global survey of 251 respondents conducted by Harvard Business Review Analytic Services, 78 percent of organizations agree or strongly agree that within two years the use of externally generated big data will be “transformational.” But there’s work to be done, since only 21 percent of respondents strongly agree that external data has already had a transformational effect on their firms.

Although data and analytics are highlighted throughout the popular press as well as in trade publications, too many managers think the value of this data processing is limited to a few numerically intensive fields such as science and finance. In fact, big data and the insights that emerge from analyzing it will transform every industry, from “precision farming” to manufacturing and construction. Governments must also be alert to the value of data and analytics as the enabler for smart cities. Institutions that master available data will leap ahead of their less statistically adept competitors through many advantages: finding hidden opportunities for efficiency, using data to become more responsive to clients, and developing entirely new and unanticipated product lines. The average time spent by most companies on the S&P 500 Index has decreased from an average of 60 to 70 years to only 22 years. There are winners and losers in the changes that come with the evolution of both technology

Forward-thinking enterprises understand what it takes to be successful in this data-rich, increasingly automated economy. According to the Harvard Business Review Analytic Services research report The Rise of Intelligent Automation: TurningComplexity into Profit, sponsored by Oracle, at least 7 in 10 executives understand that predictive analytics (80%) and AI and machine learning (68%) are important for the future of the business. Even as executives recognize the vital role data plays in their businesses, many are unable to take advantage of the value residing in their data. The old ways of collecting, managing, storing, and analyzing data are no longer effective, and are preventing businesses from extracting potential value. Many simply can’t execute on a data-driven vision.

Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse Cloud is more than just a new way to store and analyze data; it’s a whole new approach to getting more value from your data. Market leaders in every industry depend on analytics to reach new customers, streamline business processes, and gain a competitive edge. Data warehouses remain at the heart of these business intelligence (BI) initiatives, but traditional data-warehouse projects are complex undertakings that take months or even years to deliver results. Relying on a cloud provider accelerates the process of provisioning data-warehouse infrastructure, but in most cases database administrators (DBAs) still have to install and manage the database platform, then work with the line-of-business leaders to build the data model and analytics. Once the warehouse is deployed—either on premises or in the cloud—they face an endless cycle of tuning, securing, scaling, and maintaining these analytic assets. Oracle has a better way.
