Case Study: SEW-Eurodrive Develops Trust and Confidence in Automated Manufacturing Systems

By: Makino

SEW-Eurodrive of Lyman, S.C., began researching automation during the late ’90s. With its first robotic system, the company saw immediate improvements in productivity; however, issues between the machine provider and third-party integration company stretched installation timelines, and performance was unable to meet OEE goals. SEW hired Makino to fix and expand the cell, as well as install a new robotic cell, which enabled SEW to meet these goals:

  • Grow production output tenfold at the Lyman plant with only a minor increase in manpower.
  • Achieve annual production volumes of more than 500,000 units per year.
  • Become the most efficient operation within SEW-Eurodrive’s global network of manufacturing facilities, including its China operation.
