What is a Security Assessment?

In government legislation, in the media and in the operation of office networks, security has become an increasingly prominent concern. Although the popular perception that security is complex is largely a myth, many organizations struggle with the puzzle of deciding what kind of security posture is right for them, and how to go about implementing it. In particular, it can be difficult to determine what an organization’s specific security needs are, let alone how best to address them.

One way of making that determination is to conduct a security assessment. An assessment can help an organization better understand its current state of security, identify the most prominent gaps, and provide insight into how to improve the situation. Unfortunately, there’s no universally accepted standard for what constitutes a security assessment, how to go about conducting one or what to expect from it. In practice, any vendor can claim to offer security assessments, and their approaches to the craft, along with the results they provide, can vary widely.
